International Living Donor Liver Transplant UK Symposium

The BTS, co-badged with the International Living Donor Liver Transplant Group (iLDLTG), held a one-day meeting the 'International Living Donor Liver Transplant UK Symposium' bringing together experts in living donor liver transplantation from around the world to share their experiences of donor selection, donor and recipient surgical techniques (including minimally invasive approaches), long-term follow-up, ethical considerations around donation, and share the UK experience thus far.
The timing was apt with a national drive through the National Health Service Blood and Transplant Organisation (NHSBT) to increase living donor liver transplants in the UK. We specifically heard from the experts in the West on the challenges of promoting LDLT in a predominant DDLT setting.
There was also a fantastic exhibition of technical wizardry from the experts in minimally invasive LDLT surgery with innovative techniques. We also discussed in a panel forum on how to overcome challenges in terms of setting up and delivering a successful LDLT service. Importantly, there was an opportunity for young surgeons to meet the experts in a one-to-one session to explore the possibility of travelling to the expert’s centre for gaining experience that would be supported by a bursary from the BTS.

BTS are also very keen, moving forward, to continue their collaboration with iLDLTG for future events and meetings.
